Our Major Local Attractions
- The Eden Project - a stunning, world renowned project. Originally a vast china clay pit, long devoid of soil, now houses 2 huge Biomes, the largest greenhouses in the world, with Mediterranean and Humid Tropics Climate Zones. There's lots to see -an average visit is at least 5 hours - and its an 'always something new' experience !
- The Lost Gardens of Heligan - a pleasant 30-minute walk from Bacchus, these gardens were 'lost' not long after their heyday in the Victorian era. In the mild, Cornish climate everything grew and grew so that it required machetes to find a way through the tangled shrubs in 1990 when it was 're-discovered' !
- The World of Model Railways - in the centre of the village, just a 5-minute's walk from Bacchus. The dream of every boy from 6 to 60 ! A huge range of model railways set in superbly modelled scenery. Lots of Thomas the Tank engines as well.
- Lanhydrock House and Gardens - the National Trust's most amazing manor house, gardens and estate with parklands and woods running down to the river Fowey. The lovely Victorian house has 50 rooms open to viewing giving you a good idea of life in the times of the 'Upstairs, Downstairs' society.
- The Shipwreck and Heritage Centre at Charlestown and the Square Sail fleet - Charlestown's Georgian harbour village is home to these 2 attractions. The Heritage Centre shows how Charlestown developed as a port and the industries that were required for the export of China Clay. Square Sail has a fleet of Square-rigged sailing ships, often used in filming and television work. Subject to their schedules, one of the fleet is usually available for visitors to inspect.
- Truro - the county town of Cornwall is famous for its lovely Cathedral, the riverside setting and the Royal Cornwall Museum. Returning 'Cousin Jacks' - Cornish expatriates - can check out their family heritage at the Family History Society.
- Newquay - Cornwall's surfing capital with 11 sandy beaches, including some with tremendous surfing conditions, its got a stunning, rugged coastline and lovely harbour but also provides most of Cornwall's 'clubbing scene'
